Cindy Smith is in charge of fraud and embezzlement investigations for Bender, Weltman, Thomas, Perry & Co, PC, a CPA and consulting firm located in St. Louis, Missouri. She joined Bender, Weltman, Thomas, Perry & Co., P.C. in 1989.
Cindy is a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), a certification bestowed upon examination by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE). She receives ongoing specialized training in fraud investigation and prevention from the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners.
As a Certified Fraud Examiner, she possesses the expertise to investigate allegations of fraud and embezzlement, and assist in all aspects of a fraud case from inception to trial. She investigates and assists in resolving fraud and embezzlement, obtains evidence, takes statements for prosecution, works with law enforcement agencies and attorneys, and prepares reports of findings. She provides fraud risk assessments and assists organizations in setting up proper policies and procedures to reduce the risk of fraud occurring in their organization.
Cindy provides presentations regarding preventing and identifying fraud and embezzlement to a variety of organizations and groups. She is also an instructor at the St. Louis County and Municipal Police Academy, teaching detectives and police officers how to identify and investigate embezzlement.
Cindy has over 20 years of accounting experience in both the public and private sectors, as well as several years as the owner of a local business.
Cindy is a founding member of the Greater St. Louis Area Chapter of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. She serves as a Director on the Board of Directors, and also serves on the Law Enforcement Liaison Committee. Cindy is also a member of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE), the Midwest Financial Fraud Investigators (MFFI), and an Auxiliary Member of the Missouri Society of Certified Public Accountants (MSCPA).
